Other Space Martyrs
Hindsight: 480 seconds
is an interesting comparison story. It also features global disaster seen through the eyes of a man approaching his solitary oblivion. It ends poignantly with a line that would have felt at home in the Hope script:
But instead of the oceans, and all life, boiling away, Earth makes a new batch of the primordial soup. Linear versus cyclical stories.
Thorn's solitary martyrdom allows life to survive Armageddon rather like another spaceship movie, Vacuity, which also is a bottle story of a man facing fatal choices. I love it's tagline:
That stoicism puts Thorn in the same spiritual camp as Major Tom. Space Oddity would feel right at home in the sound track to Hope.
